Food
for Thought
|
Food
for Thought is the Grove City Community Food Pantry's education
programs offered to clients and community
members. As part of
our mission, we want to not only provide food and toiletries to our
clients, but also share with our clients and the
community information about basic nutrition, health,
and life skills.

How Food for Thought Started
In 2009, the students in Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic World
class at Grove City College awarded the Grove City Community Food
Pantry a grant of $2,000 to start an Education Program for food pantry
clients. The classes were to be offered before the
pantry
opened and cover a variety of topics covering healthy food preparation,
buying meals on a budget, understanding food labels, as well as life
skill courses on budgeting, finding a job, cleaning and winterizing
your home.
Classes began in the Fall of 2009 and were well received by food pantry
clients. Members of the community and other
non-profit
agencies were often the main presenters for each class.
Clients also received a bonus item that related to the topic covered
for attending the event. Childcare and refreshments
were also
provided.
The grant that was received was for one year, but through the success
of the program and the support of the Grove City Area United Way, the
food pantry will be continuing these programs and even opening them up
to the entire community.
